METATARSALGIA

The metatarsals are the long bones of the foot. They are located between the bones forming the ankle (tarsal bones) and the bones of the fingers (phalanges). The metatarsalgia is a painful condition that affects the heads of the metatarsals and is caused by compression of the plantar digital nerve.

How It appears?

The Metatarsalgia typically occurs because of the excess of activities such as running, jumping or walking. Frequently it is caused by the use of "uncomfortable" shoes, like the ones too narrow at the tip or that charge excessively the body weight on the forefoot (eg. shoes with very high heel). The metatarsalgia may also arise as a consequence of diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis or diabetes.

What are the symptoms?

The metatarsalgia causes heartburn or intermittent pains in the middle of the foot at the metatarsal heads. In the acute phases, pain makes walking intolerable  and the functionality, and the sensitivity of the forefoot and toes is reduced. Visually it also gives rise to the typical plantar callus (hyperkeratosis), very thick, which forms the front of the foot, the center of the plant.

How is it treated?

Recalling that the most appropriate treatment should always be prescribed by a specialist, typically metatarsalgia can be treated with anti-inflammatory drugs in milder cases. It is 'often indicated the use of an orthotic insole. The orthotic re-establishes the proper distribution of weight on the foot and relieve pressure on the metatarsals, thus relieving pain. In chronic conditions specific orthopedic shoes are recommended. During rehabilitation is necessary to replace the usual sports and activities with others that do not worsen the situation. For example, swimming or cycling instead of running or walking.

How to prevent metatarsalgia?

The best prevention is to wear comfortable shoes that fit well.
